Walk by faith, not by sight
On June 8, 2015, a beautiful sunny Monday, we were blessed with the arrival of our precious little boy, Myles Cameron. The joy we felt was indescribable, and we eagerly embraced the journey of parenting once again. Like all new parents, we were filled with excitement, overwhelmed with emotion, and ready to embrace whatever the future held. However, our excitement was tempered when shortly after Myles was born, we received the devastating news that he had inherited sickle cell disease, a genetic condition affecting his red blood cells, causing them to become rigid and form into crescent shapes. This condition brought about various complications, including pain, anemia, and organ damage. Despite this, Myles never allowed it to define him or limit his dreams.
As Myles grew, so did his determination to overcome the obstacles posed by sickle cell. With the unwavering support of our family, friends, and healthcare team, he pursued his passions while managing his health effectively.
Myles has shown incredible resilience and proactivity in managing his condition. He adhered diligently to his treatment plan, which included medications, regular check-ups, and staying hydrated. Additionally, he embraced a healthy lifestyle, focusing on nutritious eating habits and staying physically active to keep his body strong. Today, he proudly holds a blue belt in karate and is an enthusiastic basketball player, recently participating in the NY Knicks Summer Basketball camp.
Despite the challenges he faced, Myles remained optimistic and ambitious. He refused to let sickle cell hinder his love for sports, particularly basketball. Through determination and perseverance, he trained tirelessly, pushing through the pain and fatigue that often accompanied his condition.
Myles' dedication paid off as he not only excelled in basketball but also became an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. Together with his mom, he shares his story openly, raising awareness about sickle cell disease and advocating for better support and resources for those affected by it.
Though his journey has been marked by setbacks and difficult moments, Myles never lost sight of his resolve to live life to the fullest. He proved that with determination, resilience, and a supportive community, anything is possible. And as Myles continues to pursue his dreams and overcome the challenges of sickle cell disease, he is excited to serve as a symbol of hope and resilience, inspiring countless others to never give up in the face of adversity. His journey will stand as a testament to the power of the human spirit and the ability to triumph over adversity with courage and determination.
Gratefully, Myles is about to embark on a significant step in his journey to overcome sickle cell disease: this summer, he is scheduled to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Remarkably, his own brother volunteered to donate his bone marrow for the procedure, and miraculously, he is a perfect match. This act of sibling support adds a deeply personal and hopeful dimension to Myles' quest for improved health and well-being. With this upcoming transplant, Myles and our family hold onto the anticipation of a brighter future, filled with renewed possibilities and the potential for a life less burdened by the challenges of sickle cell disease.
We're really looking forward to embracing faith over sight, especially on Myles' actual birthday! It's the perfect day to rally together and support Myles in reaching his goal. We hope you'll join us on this journey and lend your support. With your encouragement, we believe we can achieve anything. Thanks for being part of Myles' story with us!
