Ed and Sue Goldstein, founders of The Valerie Fund, selected as 2013 New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Award recipients.
Ed and Sue Goldstein, founders of The Valerie Fund will be honored at the 2013 New Jersey State Governor's Jefferson Awards in the category of BD Health Care: Individuals on June 4th at the Newark Museum. The awards honor individual or group volunteer efforts that achieve measurable community impact and represent outstanding acts of public service without the expectation of recognition or compensation. The Health Care category recognizes individuals whose volunteer service to health institutions and organizations have enabled them to serve those in need of care and their families.
The Valerie Fund was established in 1976 in memory of Ed and Sue's daughter, Valerie, to provide support for the comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders. After their nine-year-old daughter lost her courageous fight against cancer, Ed and Sue were determined to do something in her memory that would ease the burden of other families faced with the crisis of a sick child.
The Valerie Fund was born in the Goldstein's New Jersey basement. The idea was simple: To provide families with regional outpatient treatment centers at top pediatric hospitals within an hour's drive of most of the state's population, providing state-of-the-art medical and emotional care in a happy, upbeat, child-centered atmosphere. In 1977, The Valerie Fund Children's Center at Overlook Hospital opened becoming the first comprehensive care facility for children with cancer and blood disorders in New Jersey.
Aside from receiving this prestigious award, Ed and Sue were also selected to attend ceremonies in Washington, DC to represent their community on June 18th and 19th. When asked about receiving The Jefferson Award, Ed stated, "The award should go to the entire Valerie Fund for supporting us and making our dream come true."
