Team Mango at the Verona Park Walk-A-Thon 2008

June 14, 2008, Verona Park. More than 800 people came out to support The Valerie Fund at the JAG Physical Therapy & WCBS-TV Walk-A-Thon and 5K Run. There were 175 runners at the 5K run alone. The park was filled with hundreds of smiling faces on Saturday morning as patients and their families were joined by members of the community to support The Valerie Fund.

WCBS-TV broadcasted the weather live from the park from 9-10am with weather reporter Megan Glaros. Megan interviewed several Valerie Fund kids along with Peri Kamalakar, MD, Medical Director of the Saint Barnabas Heath Care System.

Steve Bartelstein, of WCBS, was the MC for this event. Steve is currently co-anchor of CBS2 HD's weekend morning newscasts alongside Mary Calvi.

JAG Physical Therapy sponsored the event for the second year. John Gallucci said, "JAG Physical Therapy was overjoyed with the record turnout of runners and walkers for The Valerie Fund Event. There are so many people who deserve a big thank you for all of their hard work and support in making the day such as big success. This is a great cause helping kids with cancer and blood disorders, I know everyone who participated on Saturday knows how much it means to the parents, families and children."

Barry Kirschner, Executive Director of The Valerie Fund said, "Saturday was a spectacular day for The Valerie Fund. With JAG Physical Therapy and WCBS-TV upfront supporting our children fighting cancer and blood disorders, we were able to raise almost $100,000 that will benefit all the children that come through our seven Valerie Fund Children’s Centers."

The crowd enjoyed the music of Amber Blues, based out East Brunswick; the band has been a strong force in the local music scene for four years. For the first two years of their career Amber Blues performed almost exclusively around the various clubs in Asbury Park, including a performance at 2004’s Great Bamboozle at The Stone Pony.
