Cancer free is a patient's goal. Freeing yourself from cancer makes a survivor.
This team’s story starts in the winter of 1998 when the team’s captain, Sierra Spriggs, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of five years old. She endured two and a half years of chemotherapy before reaching remission. However, remission did not last. At the age of nine, Sierra’s leukemia come back. Spending another two years and a half years at the Saint Barnabas Hospital’s Valerie Fund, Sierra reached remission. Although Sierra doesn’t remember much about her first experiences at The Valerie Fund, she does remember feeling that she was important and that her life was in good hands. Those hands welcomed Sierra and her family into their care and uplifted their spirit throughout the long years of treatment. By the age of twelve, Sierra had experienced more than most people did in a lifetime and everyone thought Sierra had seen the end of her battle with cancer. However, this battle was not over yet and at the age of sixteen, Sierra began her third round of chemotherapy after her second relapse. Fighting for her life, Sierra braved the high doses of chemotherapy with a smile. Instead of feeling anger toward her situation, she decided to fight cancer with a positive attitude because if she did not make it out of the battle, she wanted to be remembered being happy. As the two year anniversary of finishing treatment approaches, Sierra is a freshman at Essex County College as a social science major. Sierra is also an intern for The Valerie Fund. She decided since she made it, she would do anything she could to help other childhood patients make it. Turning 19 in March, Sierra has 14 years of experience with leukemia and thinks The Valerie Fund is one of the reasons why she is here, while her team of family and friends are another reason. No one knows the future but with The Valerie Fund, a childhood patient’s future is bright. Support brighter futures. :)
